Raised on rhythm - Unga Dramaten
The jury’s motivation
Raised on Rhythm is a bodily total experience where dance, rhythm and music seamlessly intertwine to create a playful, explosive, energizing universe. From the audience's own heartbeat, the dancers take us on a winding story where rhythms are controlled and released through games and rituals. Raised on Rhythmcreates a space of rare communion and release. A space that breaks the boundary between stage and theatre and allows rhythm to propagate into a common pulse.
Rhythm makes the world go round - at least if you ask Niki Tsappos, the dancer and choreographer behind this performance. But where does rhythm come from? What does it do to us? And where does it begin and end? Raised on Rhythm is a dance performance that investigates, explores and celebrates the power and depth of rhythm. It is about rhythm as a breeding ground for energy and creativity. About rhythm's inviting ability to build community while making room for individual identity. Its impact on our daily lives - in dance, play, work and everyday activities. On the role of rhythm in history and in the future.
Niki Tsappos is a choreographer and dancer. She has won numerous dance competitions and awards, most notably becoming the first female duo to win the World Street Dance Championship in 2010 with Martha Nabwire. The duo's collaboration was also captured in the acclaimed documentary film Martha & Niki in 2016. She also makes music, under the name Niki Awandee.
Erik Hjärpe is the keyboardist in the band Damn! which is perhaps best known for its collaboration with Timbuktu, and which recently had a successful run as the house band in the musical Cabaret on the Dramaten's main stage. He also composes music for television and theatre, and creates hip hop beats and remixes under the name Voz Vibrante.
