8 kvadrat - Kulturhuset Stadsteatern Husby
The jury’s motivation
The world can be contained in a small space. It can also be hidden in a story that starts here and now. And which shows the warm and tender relationship of two brothers. A story that overflows to all of us who are there. And which speaks directly to us with a rigorous and sensitive language. Through the drama of the small world, the big world is mirrored. In a performance that shows the breadth of a heart and a soul, the two actors show us what 8 square metres can be.
On February 17th 2023, the acclaimed play 8 kvadrat had its premiere at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern Husby. A story where a boy’s bedroom becomes an entire universe – a theatre play surrounded by brotherhood, adulthood, conflicts and uncomfortable truths.
This isn’t our country, we just happened to be born here. We belong to a larger people than these. Religion reached us first, trade began from us, when we built churches and universities these people scratched themselves in the balls and picked berries in the snow.
Ermias and Yosef spend more time in their cell, their shared boys’ room, than anywhere else, yet their time together feels like being confined, sometimes.
8 kvadrat is a newly written play about two sons sharing a room they might have outgrown. What will they do with their lives? How does one’s choices affect the other? How can they support each other while also in conflict? How significant can 8 square meters be in a life?
