Som bröder
- Helsingborgs stadsteater
With a pulsating tempo, humor, and profound seriousness, the one-act play Som bröder returns to Helsingborg City Theatre. The performance is based on a series of autobiographical poems by the Danish playwright and actor Alexander Mayah Larsen.
The mother is Swedish. The father is Iranian. Together with their teenage sons, the family lives in one of the city’s suburban neighborhoods. On the surface, everything seems fine, but behind the closed blinds, other scenes unfold, where the father is king and tries to control everything. When the king is displeased with his sons, he repeats that it was a mistake for them to be born. The older and younger brothers seek escape from the unstable everyday life. They drift further apart and into new, sometimes dangerous paths that give them what they lack in life: love and recognition.
Som bröder is a story about a family, about the love between two young brothers, and their struggle to find footing in a fractured existence. It is playful and charming, yet also heart-wrenching and at times violent — a story about having roots in two different cultures, about adapting and belonging, about prejudice and relationships. And not least, about how chance can shape the paths we take in life.
Note: The performance contains strobe and flashing lights.
