Juryns motivation

Framtidsbarnet by Omid Khansari is a thrilling and suggestive sci-fi about longing and belonging, firmly grounded in a child-centred perspective. The bold and distinctive direction of Martin Rosengardten, skilfully seize the potential in theatre’s here and now, where the lighting, sound, space and acting  converge into playful solutions and a wonderful theatrical play. Lilja Fredrikson’s finely tuned portrayal of Framtidsbarnet is captivating, making this wellmade and unexpected production also become deeply moving.

In Framtidsbarnet, we meet AL-I, who lives in isolation from the outside world together with their Guardian. Daily life is governed by rules, and AL-I carries a constant feeling of doing something wrong — of being wrong. One day, AL-I’s teddybear begins to speak and reveals a shocking truth: AL-I is not an ordinary child. Piece by piece, AL-I discovers that there is an entire world beyond the one that has been their reality — a world they have never been allowed to experience. AL-I’s longing to break free, explore the world and become part of a family grows ever stronger. In the end, AL-I decides to escape.

In this newly written and evocative sci-fi drama, we follow a child’s desperate longing for unconditional love and belonging. What is it like to have strange parents, to be seen as a strange child, and to grow up in a dysfunctional family? Classic questions are raised, such as: Who am I, in relation to myself and the world? What is fiction, what is reality, and what does it mean to have a human consciousness?

Framtidsbarnet premiered in Mockfjärd on 3 October and subsequently toured across Sweden for school years 4–6.
