The Jury’s Motivation

Finally, it has happened! An opera for children set in a school canteen. With dinner ladies, pots and pans and ladles. But also, a consultant demanding increased efficiency. Among the pots and pans conflicts arise between tradition and renewal, fish balls and pan pizza, rivalry and solidarity. This comical and sharply satirical play by Anders Duus (from 2003) has been transformed into entertaining absurd musical theatre accompanied by newly composed, swinging jazzy music by Lars Ljungberg.

In the school kitchen, Irene and Ritva work side by side. They disagree about almost everything. Irene wants to renew things and serve the children pan pizza and soda. Ritva loathes change. She has worked in the school kitchen since the beginning of time and wants everything to remain exactly as it has always been. On Mondays, fish balls are served — period.

One day, the mysterious woman Hansson arrives and begins observing their work. Irene and Ritva mostly find her to be in the way. It soon turns out that Hansson has been sent by the principal to streamline operations and cut costs. Surely a small school can manage with just one person in the kitchen? Suddenly, the everyday routine turns into a competition. One of them has to go. Will it be Irene or Ritva?

Måndag är fiskbulledag is a fast-paced and entertaining newly written opera, based on a theatre play from 2005 by Anders Duus. The music, composed by percussionist Lars Ljungberg for piano and vibraphone, draws on lively jazz influences. The libretto is written by Maria Sundqvist.
